As a youngster Karen Carpenter enjoyed playing Baseball with other children on her street. Her brother, Richard, was interested in music, becoming a ‘Piano Prodigy’. Karen Carpenter did not show any musical interest in the early stages of her life. When Karen Carpenter entered Downey High School she joined the school band and became interested in playing the drums, seeming to have a natural talent, as well as enjoying it.
From 1965 to 1968 Karen Carpenter played with her brother Richard and Wes Jacobs, a college friend, performing in nightclubs mainly, and later they teamed up with other performers as ‘The Spectrum’, with little success. Eventually in 1969 A & M Records signed up ‘The Carpenters’, and they had considerable success, particularly with their album, Close To You, which included the two massive hit singles, ‘They Long to Be’ (Close to you), and ‘We’ve Only just Begun’.
Karen Carpenter started dieting, under supervision initially, in 1967, and with the constant feeling that she was not in control of her life, dieted obsessively.         
She developed ‘Anorexia Nervosa’, which contributed to many cancelled tour dates and Karen and Richard stopped touring completely in 1978.   
In 1981 Karen and Richard released the album ‘Made in America’ and returned to the stage for a time.
Karen was a very reluctant singer, although talented, and much preferred to play the drums, which added to her unhappiness and obsession with dieting. She made a solo album in 1979, but it did not take off at all.
Living on and off with her parents, Karen Carpenter had a whirlwind romance with Thomas Burris, after various failed relationships and married him in 1980. The marriage was not happy, Karen Carpenter finding it all ‘Boring’, and they divorced in 1981.
Karen Carpenter’s last song, in 1982, was ‘Now’. She then alternated between hospital treatment and gaining and losing weight. On February 4th 1983, a month before her 33rd birthday Karen Carpenter suffered heart failure, brought on by her Anorexia Nervosa, and died. Karen Carpenter’s death focused a lot of attention on the illness ‘Anorexia Nervosa’, and in 1989 a TV-Movie ‘The Karen Carpenter Story’ was made.


THE FIRST HOUSE...
CANCER RISING SIGN.
SELF-PROJECTION.Self-Projection means, the way one projects themselves out into the public eye; how others see them, though not necessarily how they really are. How one goes through life, the basic energy to secure what is needed is an instinctive self-projective measure, either within an aggressive or defensive mode.
You really project yourself as a homely person, one whose purpose in life is to be there for the family unit. You are often the head chef and bottle-washer, who rules the roost, the 'Mother-Hen' who clucks away, making sure the family is well-fed and watered. You can also be the breadwinner in many cases, taking the head seat at the table and ensuring there is always a roof over your family home and food in the larder.
You can be very self-protective at times, quick to feel it if anyone were to make any remarks about you or your family. While you may present a hard shell to the world, it’s a fact that you a quite soft inside and the 'Ego' is very close to the surface. When upset, you can be very direct, but your normal route is to go around the houses. The family is the thing you fight for and you fight when you quickly feel others threaten your sense of emotive comfort.
To a degree, you take a defensive stance in this world and will only retaliate when you or those close are threatened by anyone outside the family. Your home is your castle, outside it, you feel vulnerable. There are times when others might feel you are too quick to sense personal attacks and for this reason others might walk on ‘Egg-Shells’ when close to you. This, again, would show the vulnerability of your nature, though you will not openly attack, you might just show a sharp ‘Claw’, to ‘Nip’ things in the bud, as a defensive mechanism… But only when you might feel ‘Crabby’.
What you have just read is the basic traits in your Birth-Chart… But what you read now is a fuller interpretation of your psychological, inner-sense, as to how you project yourself out into the world.
In many respects, those with a Cancer Rising Sign tend to cling to tradition, using the past as a sensing antenna, so that one tends to deal with things in a habitual way. One is very sensitive to atmospheres and will not like changes from what one is 'Used' to. The tendency is to collect things around the self, to have things which are treated as a family, it can be a family of 'Dolls' or a collection of memorabilia which represents the past which, revoke strong feelings. The Cancer Rising Sign is 'Patriotic' to the core and will resent adverse remarks regarding where one 'Stems' from.
With this combination, the early childhood conditioning can have a lot to do with how one deals with life because what is learned from the experience of 'Growing Up' will influence the way one makes decisions and one can often follow the trend of the Mother, using old sayings and working in the same way as a 'Family Tradition'. However, because Cancer is the Rising Sign in the 1st. House and that the 1st. House indicates the personal 'I' and the 'Me First' principle, one is resolved to take the lead and have others dependent on them. Whatever one becomes attached to, over a period of time and so becomes 'Used To', will become seen as being an 'Extended' member of the Family.

In a way, her 'Family Act' and 'Staged Presentation' meant that she felt she had to take the lead, be at the head of the Family Unit and this was what kept the family purse well-filled.
A problem here would have been that the Cancer Rising Sign is not into 'Showing Off', or presenting the 'Self' as one who dressed like a 'Peacock'. Again, with her Moon in Leo, she would have resented having to dress up like a 'Child' so that finances were secured through the organisation of 'Family Management'. In this way, Karen Carpenter would have felt the pressure of working within the family did not allow her to grow up, to buy and wear what she wanted. But, because the sign of Cancer represents a dislike of change, she had to do what the family unit wanted.
It has to be noted that, in Karen Carpenter's Birth Chart, the Moon is conjunct Pluto in the 2nd. House. This conjunction would have a definite effect on her emotions, psychologically, making her very vulnerable to feelings of isolation and putting up 'Self-Protective' barriers when with others.

THE SECOND HOUSE.
FINANCIAL SECURITY.What is meant by Financial Security is the way in which you protect yourself through a sense of material possessions. It implies the need to own, in a practical and material sense, so that it gives a solid foundation. You might buy a house so that roots are put down, a base from which you can work. The implication is what you would need to possess in life as a practical building block so that you feel secure.
When it comes to finance; pride can be a problem, in that it can be very hard to ask others to help you out with a loan. In many respects, if you have children and grandchildren, you may never be rich, simply because your money is spent on their welfare. When it comes to financial security, you work through a sense of pride. You will always manage to rake up some money for food and children’s clothes, even know how to create substance from a few crusts and some old material.
First, you will never ask another to help you finance your children’s welfare, that is beneath your dignity, as it is to see your children made fun of because of poor representation. You always will have the power to create ways of making money and love to buy or own things which represent wealth. But you never go over the top, lashing out on gold; you understand that money in the bank is always there if a golden opportunity comes along. You will take a gamble on something, like winning the lottery, but not if it puts you or your children at financial risk!
You can always be very good at ‘Creating’ ways of making money, as well as spending it, though you try never to go on a spending-spree, unless you feel you have a ‘Royal-Flush’ hand to play with!

With the Zodiac Sign of Leo covering one's house, the urge is to create ways of purchasing what is needed so that one feels proud of what one possesses, in that what is bought will 'Show Off' the nature and identify how well one has done in life. What one owns is a statement of 'Self-Worth' although, with Leo covering the 2nd. House, one is inclined to give much away through generosity. This can always be the catch with this combination, in that the urge to be generous for the sake of being respected in a royal way for such generosity can keep one poor and always working as a provider!

It can be certain that this Sacrifice, of her need for 'Spiritual' refinement, to be put into the loud and brassy world of Show-Business, was the cage which held in a spirited little bird which cried for freedom and so began to seek refuge in escape to a higher place of safety, to go to her 'Lord'.
It has to be understood that much of this is psychological, although those close to her would have soon sensed her spirit of Sacrifice, willing to help those who made appeals to her sympathetic and 'Soft-Hearted' nature!

THE THIRD HOUSE.
COMMUNICATIVE SPIRIT.The spirit of communication implies the way in which one thinks, one’s method of logic, expressed through mediums of speech and writing. It is how one communicates within the local environment, the way information is gained and communicated to others. This is an area of everyday conversation, what one might talk about and who to. The sense is light-hearted and conducted in a spirited way.
You work in an advisory capacity, more inclined to offer words of advice rather than just simply chatter on about anything. You are more a listener; one who thinks over what is being said, before giving an answer, analysing and sifting any question so that it make perfect sense.
You are always reasonable with others and like to be there for those who need you, more comfortable giving answers than asking questions yourself. House, the House of 'Communication', then one will tend to discriminate and be discerning about what's said, so that it makes perfect sense, that on can qualify answers to others through a sense of being co-operative.

House she would tend to become rather secret, that Karen Carpenter would keep her fears of 'Getting it all wrong' to herself, the torment and stress having affect on biochemical changes within her body so that, psychologically, this could determine a 'Freeze' of physical 'Love' and the feelings of emotional qualities, a sense of 'Not Sharing' her mind with others.
It has to be remembered that Mercury in the 8th. House can produce 'Unconscious' thought processes so that one will act instinctively to 'Brain-Activity' without being aware of what one is doing. EMOTIONAL SECURITY.Emotional Security is all about how one feels, one’s sense of atmosphere and how one ‘Feels’ about the past, in the way the past reflects on how one deals with the present. If you had a good early home-life, the past kind to you, this would be reflected in the way you react to present situations and vice-versa. Emotional Security is all about atmospheres and our reactions to them.
You are one who relates easily to a homely and comfortable atmosphere. You are not into bad or noisy atmospheres, where there are rows. Mind you, you are not into silence neither. You relate to nature and a natural balance in all things, the idea of give and take. You will always try to make a home comfortable, a place where others can rest in peace. You give your attention to anything which sets off a gentle atmosphere but you will move out if others only take what you offer without giving you that same sense of harmony in return.
You can feel very much at home in places like churches and nature reserves, places where there is a feeling of acceptance and where the worries and wars of the world cannot affect you. It can hurt you to read of turbulence and wars, of violence and hate; at such times, you are liable to retreat into your home and lock the door. All you seek is a heart full of peace and quiet, a place where you find relative peace and emotional security. In life, you would feel that a partner who can offer you this sanctuary is one who can provide all the ‘Mother-Comforts’.

The 4th. House gives indication of one's early childhood conditioning and according to one's upbringing, this can colour and shape how one feels about what is presented in later life. If one should have had a bad time, being fed cabbage by a parent, then later in life the memory of that smell will bring instant memories of being 'Force-Fed'. In this way, memories which feed the nature, whether good or bad will cause an instinctive reaction, of feelings which are either good or bad. Such flight instincts must not be mistaken for cowardice, this indicates a nature that seeks to be in relative peace but not at any price. When one considers the nature of the whole, of Venus in Aquarius in the 8th. House then one must consider that, with Venus extended from Libra in the 4th. House, that Karen Carpenter was raised to become a member of the group, to be forced in some way to accept the changes to her nature, that of seeking a peaceful existence. In this way, with the parents seeking to raise their 'Social Status', to live an independent life of 'Financial Uplift', Karen Carpenter was exposed to the noisy and inharmonious atmosphere of a 'Group Setting'.
Psychologically, Karen Carpenter would have 'Secretly' hated the life, of being suddenly moved from the ideal life of being comfortable in a relaxed atmosphere at home, to become exposed to the inharmonious atmosphere of the life in the 'Limelight', to secretly dread the times of travelling and upsets caused by such an 'Erratic' moving all the time, being away from the comforts of the 'Home'.
Of course, this hatred and the desire to be away from such an atmosphere would cause instinctive repercussions to the 'Will', to look into the 'Future', to see what lies ahead. Of course, with a Libra 4th. House, Karen Carpenter would do whatever it took for the sake of peace and quiet, so she kept her feelings secret, keeping this sense of emotive 'Disruption' inside, even though this repression would have a deep psychological 'Transference' in that her she could not express her 'Will' to 'Get Away' from the 'Racket', to become independent, would have effect on her behaviour, both emotionally and mentally.
One can point fingers at the conditions this lady lived under and had the parents understood the nature of her feelings, then she might still be alive. The nature of the 8th. House is to 'End' what is to be 'Got Rid' of and to 'Begin Again'. In Karen Carpenter's life this meant to get 'Rid' of one life and to 'Begin' a new life, where she might 'Feel' more at 'Home'!

THE FIFTH HOUSE.
NATURAL CREATIVITY.
Natural Creativity implies where one has natural flair, a need to show-off what comes naturally, be it your children, creative ideas or taking a chance on romance. A gamble and sense of fun comes under the influence of natural creativeness, as does poetry and other artistic forms.
Your life can go through changes and challenges, especially when children are born. What makes you really proud is the fact that all you have has been gained through what you and your partner have created. This implies that you are very proud of your part in procreating whatever is in your life; your children are at the very heart of you and you will be determined to secure for them what they need.
In a strange way, it can always seem that the partnership between you and the person who shared in the joy of having children, seems to wane; as if you are then determined to make it on your own in some way, to be determined that children, or any creative ideas of yours, become the sole objects of your concern. Often this can be where finance is concerned, in that finance is not shared as a resource so that you determine to make it yourself and might begin to undermine the joint venture.
Strangely; you might find it hard to be creative on your own, that you need a partner to innovate ideas or for the obvious intention of procreation. You really are a determined soul and take pride in the fact that you can overcome most challenges in life and are a strong believer in fate, in Kismet and Karma.
You are into creating a sense of ‘Shared Resources’, when it comes to partnerships, that what a partner does, in a creative spirit, so you will try to give what you receive. In this sense, whatever you and your partner get will be shared with the children, usually this is in the financial sense.

It's often a case that the sense of 'Fun and Games', that it takes 'Two to Tango', ends in the determined effort to have children and so the nature of Scorpio, to 'End' things and to 'Begin Again' indicates that, by creating children or whatever is created through a bonding, ends the 'Free-Style' so that the serious work of Parenting begins.

The nature is to change the idea of leisure and playful activities, with is the 5th. House environment, to alter the structure of what is spontaneously enjoyed, of creating a sense of pleasure, to cause a change in the circumstance so that what is created by a 'Joint Venture' becomes the object which causes a change to the idea of taking things far more seriously and to have pride in what is created so that the 'Life' is now not one's own to satisfy but to become determined to secure what is best for the 'Created' child.

EXPANSION THROUGH EXPERIENCE. The main problem can be impatience, wanting things to happen quickly so that you gain a reputation as being somewhat selfish and not willing to accept any kind of judgement. It’s often the case of putting all your energy into a job which gains you a rise in status, the promotion. You may never be happy sitting at the bottom of the pile, impatient to do things your own way so that you run, often before you have learned the ropes so that falling from grace, when young, can be inevitable.
Time is important to you and you really hate being late, so you are the original early bird, the first into work and the first to leave.
